Indigo (Fold, Clamp, Resist) Workshop (for up to 8 participants)

Join us for a workshop in our studio space! Workshop participants will get familiar with the incredible plant, Japanese Indigo (persicaria tinctoria) in a small group setting. Indigo has been used to dye textiles for thousands of years!

Workshop participants will learn about indigo and a variety of shibori techniques to prepare fabric for dyeing in a natural indigo vat.  Join us to explore various folding, binding, and clamping techniques to make beautiful blue and white patterns.  After preparing fabric, we’ll introduce them into the indigo vat and will repeat the process of dipping and oxidizing until the desired depth of blue is achieved before unbinding our beautiful fabrics! Workshop participants will be able to choose between a variety of materials for dyeing:  bandana, pillowcase, cloth napkins or a piece of cotton fabric yardage.  Participants may also bring 1 x article of clothing, fabric, etc. from home to dye.  All fabric should be 100% natural fiber like cotton or linen.

Each participant will prepare a bandana or tote bag using shibori techniques, folding, clamping, binding, etc. to make a unique pattern on their textile. Everyone will get to dip their prepared pieces in the indigo vat a couple of times. Watching the indigo turn from green to blue feels pretty magical! Come out and join us for a little bit of magic and plant appreciation!

Each participant will go home with their own custom made, unique, indigo dyed organic cotton bandana or cotton market tote bag + fresh indigo dyed piece!

All materials included and supplied:

• 1 x organic cotton bandana, cotton tote bag, cotton yardage, pillowcase or cloth napkins

• Clamps, resists, indigo vat and other materials

• Information about the process and results.

Our workshops are located in our upper Lawrenceville studio. There are 3 steps to the front door. Please email with any accessibility questions and we will do our best to accommodate your needs. Thank you!

This workshop is for participants 18 and older unless accompanied by an adult. Please email us with questions regarding anyone younger than 18.

For a full refund, cancellations must be made 7 days in advance. If you need to cancel after this, then we will do our best to fill the spot and if we do, then we will offer you a gift certificate for a future workshop or product. You are welcome to transfer or gift the workshop slot to someone in the event you are unable to make it .

Our workshops require a minimum of 4 participants in order to be held. If a workshop does not meet this minimum, you will be notified ahead of time and will receive a full refund.
